Adventures

Discover the cloud forest! Choose you own adventure!
Bellavista is a place where you can find your own adventure,  easy hikes to discover a magical cloud forest you´ve probably never seen before, or deep adventure walking sinuous trails way into the forest and up to its waterfalls. Tall, aged trees festooned with epiphytes including exquisite orchids, a ground story with myriads of plants, even those who live in Bellavista find new wonders on every hike! Go with one of our naturalist guides, and learn about cloud forest ecology and to identify its denizens, and then discover on your own – take our self-guided trail that is designed to take your thoughts deeper into the forest.–and to awaken children’s innate desire to learn, think creatively, and explore.

Some options for adventure within the Reserve:

Waterfall discovery hike

hike up the Valley of Mist in the stream, reaching a pretty waterfall, where a ladder and a rope takes you up to the next level of the stream, and to the Hidden Falls, where a refreshing natural massage of cascading waters awaits you under the falls!

Secret Valley
ask about this new option – an area of the Reserve away in the next valley, where the only access is by a hiking trail! An overnight with tents is suggested to explore the area – a nice waterfall, a jacuzzi stream, ….  truly the last word in remoteness.

Horse Trails
Various options from one hour to a half day. Trails go inland to offer great views while the horses’ feet find the way, and we are opening a new option that takes riders to some amazing waterfalls on a neighbouring reserve, ending up at a nice  place near the river where a lunch of local specialities will be served.

Birding at Bellavista is amongst the best anywhere

The area of Nono/ Tandayapa/ Bellavista/ Mindo recently won the Audubon Christmas Bird Count  – no mean feat – for the highest single day bird species count worldwide! With over 340 species of birds recorded in the Tandayapa Valley , your searches will be rewarded! And EVERYBODY falls in love with the myriad hummingbirds at such close quarters – we actually guarantee that you will see hummingbirds at Bellavista!  Find  more birding info by selecting  “Birding” from the site’s menu, and check out Murray Cooper’s superb photos.

Discover our region of northwestern Ecuador

The region around Bellavista has more wonders – canopy experiences, the now famous Reserva Paz de las Antpittas (described under “Birding”), a  butterfly farm in the nearby town of Mindo , Cock-of-the-Rock leks,, different wildlife at different elevations,  more waterfalls, rushing rivers, and white-water rafting. Tell us  about your interests – northwestern Ecuador is only now really beginning to open up to tourism, so we too are discovering new places all the time.

Mountain Biking

We have purchased mountain bikes to offer  exhilarating rides to various good destinations nearby. By offering mostly downhill trips, you can make your ride easy by having a vehicle accompany you to bring you back to Bellavista. Or if you wish, you can hire a bike and take off into the unknown!  Suggested trips go to Mindo town, to Tulipe’s enigmatic archaeological remains, or to the Tucanopy, where as well as 1200 meters of canopy ride, a hearty barbecue lunch can be organized.
